Thumb Not Green? Try These Gardening Ideas!

There are a lot of great reasons to start or maintain a garden: fresh air; sunlight; and exposure to nature are great for your health; and growing your own flowers and/or food can be an empowering experience. If you’re interested in gardening but you could use a few tips to make your gardening experience easier and more pleasant, read on!

If your flowers leaves are curling, this probably means they are not getting enough nutrients. The soil might not be rich enough, or some insects might be stealing the nutrients from your flowers. Look for eggs or bugs around the roots of your plants. Buy insecticide or additional nutrients for your plants.

An excellent way to store the goodies from a homegrown garden is to freeze them in small batches. Using small sealable plastic bags and cutting small amounts of fresh vegetables every few days will help store the extras from the garden. Just bag and toss in the freezer and the packets can be added at any time to soups and pastas year round.

Roses can be difficult to grow in the best of conditions. Increase your chances for success by choosing the right rose for your climate. If your area has harsh winter conditions look for a rose with thicker petals. Mildew resistant varieties are ideal for humid areas and heat tolerant roses will do best in arid areas.

You can use small clay pots or milk jugs to protect your plants from a late season frost. A bed sheet is also an effective cover on shrubs or large areas. Typically, young sprouts are the most vulnerable. If you forget or your efforts fail, you may be forced to replant the crop.

Plant heather to attract beneficial insects. Heather will attract bees early in the spring as well as other beneficial insects. Beds of heather are largely undisturbed and make a perfect living space for spiders, beetles and a variety of other beneficial tenants. Always remember this, and wear your gardening gloves if you prune your heather!

If you are interested in sustainable organic gardening, consider keeping part of your property undeveloped so that wildlife can flourish there. Your cultivated garden spaces will benefit from the various insects and wildlife that will inhabit and pollinate the undeveloped space.

Coffee grounds are a good addition to your soil. These coffee grounds have many nitrogenous nutrients that your plants could use. Your plants will really bloom if they get the nitrogen they need from coffee grounds or compost or diluted urea.

Know the benefits of composting. Composting is one of the best things you can do for your organic garden. Composting improves moisture levels, promotes fertility, and stimulates plant roots. You can start your own composting at home, and reduce your household waste, as well as get free food for your garden.

Now are you ready to get started? Use these tips to boost your gardening skills. Enjoy the fresh air, sunlight, and being outdoors! Hopefully, you will have a great experience that you will want to repeat year after year! Share with family and friends! They will love it!…
